What You Need

This page lists the basic items commonly used for 3D printing. Some items are needed for nearly every print, while others are optional tools that make printing, cleanup, or assembly easier.

Do I Need to Own My Own Printer?

You do not need to own a 3D printer to use printable files. Send the model file, usually an STL or 3MF, to a campus MakerLab, a library makerspace, a local print shop, or an online print service. They print the part and hand it back or ship it. This route skips the printer, the filament, and the slicing setup entirely. A person gets a finished part without buying hardware or installing software. These are independent services that set their own pricing, turnaround, and terms, so review what each one offers and requires before sending anything.


Required Equipment


3D Printer

The printer builds the object one layer at a time. A heated nozzle melts filament and lays it down in thin layers, which stack to form the finished part. The nozzle and, on many machines, the build plate run hot enough to burn, so keep clear of them while the printer is working. Every movement and temperature comes from the file you load from the slicer.

Filament

Filament is the material used by the printer to create the object. PLA is often used for basic prints because it is easy to print and widely available. Other materials, such as PETG or TPU, may be used depending on the device and its purpose.

Slicing Software

Slicing software prepares the 3D model for printing. It converts the model into instructions the printer can follow and allows the user to adjust settings such as orientation, layer height, infill, supports, and material type. The slicer usually pairs with the printer; for example, Bambu Lab printers use Bambu Studio, Prusa printers use PrusaSlicer, and Cura runs across a wide range of printers. It is not always required to pair the matching slicer with your printer. However, some features may not be available if different slicers are used.

File Transfer Method

Some printers receive files over Wi-Fi. Others read from a USB stick, a microSD card, or a full-size SD card plugged into the machine. Check which connection your printer uses before you slice the file.

Helpful Tools

Several of these tools have sharp edges or blades, and a few involve chemicals or fast-bonding adhesive. Work carefully, keep them away from children, and follow the instructions and warnings on each product.


Flush Cutters

Flush cutters trim filament, snip support material off the part, and clear blobs left along edges. The flat jaw sits against the surface, so a cut leaves less of a stub than an angled cutter does.

Scraper

A scraper lifts prints off the build plate when they bond hard to the surface. Slide the blade under a corner at a low angle; digging straight down scratches the plate and can snap thin parts.

Hand Files

Hand files are used to smooth rough edges, remove small imperfections, or adjust areas where printed parts need to fit together.

Calipers

Calipers are used to measure objects and check the size of printed parts. They are especially helpful when a print needs to fit a person, object, or specific piece of equipment.

Isopropyl Alcohol

Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) strips skin oil and dust off the build plate. A clean plate grips the first layer, while finger grease can cause corners to peel up mid-print. Use 90% or higher so it evaporates without leaving water behind. IPA is flammable, so keep it away from heat and hot parts of the printer, and use it in a well-ventilated space.

Glue Stick or Bed Adhesive

A glue stick or bed adhesive can help prints stick to the build plate. This may not be needed for every printer or material, but it can be helpful when a print has trouble staying attached during printing. A glue stick can also act as a release layer for materials such as TPU, which may stick too strongly to some build plates.

Superglue

Superglue can be used to join printed parts together or attach small items to a print. This may be useful for prints that require assembly, magnets, inserts, or other added parts. It bonds skin in seconds and gives off irritating fumes, so use it carefully and allow it to dry in a well-ventilated space.

Hooks and Picks

Hooks and picks are used to remove small pieces of support material, clean out tight spaces, or clear small details in a print.

Pliers

Pliers can be used to pull away support material, hold small parts, or assist with basic assembly.

Deburring Tool

A deburring tool is used to remove rough edges, raised areas, or extra material from a print. It can help make printed parts feel smoother and more finished.

Air Duster

An air duster can be used to remove dust, small pieces of filament, or loose debris from the printer or printed parts.

Print Dependent Items

Some prints may require additional items, such as screws, nuts, bolts, rubber bands, straps, magnets, or other assembly materials and tools. These items depend on the specific device being printed and should be listed with the individual device instructions when needed.
